Inspired by City farms, tomatoes, sorrel; Stephen Duffy, Robyn Hitchcock, XTC, Wilco, Marcel Proust, Nabokov, Italo Calvino; Going in and staying out, Marcel are a gloriously eccentric troupe of English popsters whose quirky melodic songs simply don't sound like anyone else.

Check We The Undersigned and Zugwang on their MySpace page and The Soft Bus EP for evidence.

More info on the event below

By George you're English and you know how to party. Only you don't tend to do it on your national day. Time to change all that and grab St George's day back for the people. So forget that dragon slaying fella and let's celebrate the Georges who made England great - Harrison, Formby, Orwell, Boy, Michael, George from the Famous Five and Osborn (just kidding).

So on Friday April 23rd come on down to the Alternative St George's Day shindig at The Royal George- 133 Charing Cross Road, WC2H 0EA.

      We have...

Four bands playing their own tunes and English pop classics
DJs spinning English music all night - Beatles, Blur, Stone Roses, Smiths, Libertines, Kinks
English cheese raffle, English beers, English wine, Bunting, Shove ha'penny and more. We might even get Chatroulette going

It'll probably rain on the way home too

There will also be a Canadian take-over half way through the night to celebrate one of that country's most eminent citizens.

It'll be your last chance to party before you get a Tory government too so make the most of it.

Tickets will be very cheap, but there won't be many of them. So join the guest list asap and we'll tell you how to book yours very soon.

NB non English persons very welcome. We are after all very good at crashing your big days so please come to ours.

Check out the Facebook page too

Popjunkie's Alternative St George's Night is less than a month away.
You can find the all the details on the Facebook page

      http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=104822772884318

      or
at the bottom of this page.

So today we are announcing three bands and an amazing writer who'll be
      at the gig.

First up is this mob The Shadow Kabinet

A genius psych pop outfit fronted the ultra talented Steve Somerset,
the Kabs have released two corking albums and are working on a third.
They don't get out to play live much, so this should be really
      special.

Here's some more info from Shindig

Smiling Worlds Apart - Steve Somerset, AKA The Shadow Kabinet, deserves to take his place among the distinguished company of several English ’60s-inspired psych-pop troubadours. If you are so inclined you can detect in his music traces of Bowie, Syd, Donovan, Ray Davies, Robyn Hitchcock, XTC, Martin Newell and a score of lesser lights, but such influence-spotting is to miss the point. Mr Somerset excels at inventive and romantic tunes on which he plays and sings everything. The songs are simply too good to be derivative; fans of the artists mentioned above will really enjoy this CD. There are some wry observations on ‘Office Life’ and ‘Trouble And Strife’ and a gentle humour is at work on ‘Bad Hair Day’ and the nifty instrumental ‘Tabla Motown’. Another instro, ‘Surfing On The Shadows’ is a twanging, rumbling guitar-fest. One of the strongest tunes, ‘The Strings Of Her Sitar’ contains no sitars at all. With 19 songs the finer points of this excellent album are best appreciated in smaller doses. Phil Suggitt Shindig Magazine June
