Spotify adds private listening - so you can keep your Dadrock addiction from Facebook friends

The other day I posted about how I thought that sharing the music you play on Spotify on Facebook might make people (ok, me) a little more cautious about what they play. After all most of us like to appear as edgy, young cool hipsters, even if most of the time we listen to dad rock classics rather than the hottest new combo from Dalston.

Well it appears Spotify has been tuning in to the online debate for they have introduced something called 'Private Listening.' Earlier today the streaming music service's official Twitter account announced 'Now you can temporarily hide your guilty pleasures. We call it "Private listening" and you can find it in the Spotify/File menu.'

It wasn't there when I opened Spotify a few minutes ago, so I am guessing you will need to update Spotify before it arrives. I assume you tick a box and it temporarily prevents you sharing your music with your Facebook followers. You then untick when you fancy spinning some Soundcarriers. If you don't want to share your music with Facebook anyhow go to 'Edit' and then 'Preferences' and change the setting.

So good news for ageing Oasis fans. Your constant repeat play of the new Noel Gallager album will be your little secret after all.

Spotify halves listening time for free users - time for its users to cough up the cash?

In a blog post today http://www.spotify.com/uk/blog/archives/2011/04/14/upcoming-changes-to-spotif... Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has outlined some changes to the free service. They include cutting the amount of free listening to ten hours a month and limiting the number of plays of a certain song to just five per month. The changes will come in for most people at the end of April.

As a subscriber I welcome the move. Spotify is the best £10 I spend each month. The ability to access all those new albums, as well as the huge back catalogue, and have chosen tracks on my iPhone and iPad is easily worth that rather paltry investment.

Spotify has been too generous with its free offering and if it is to survive and prosper - and it would be a disaster for both music lovers and the European tech industry if it went under - it needs to get a wider subscriber base.

So, if you use the free service now is the time to cough up the cash, especially if you own a smartphone. What does £10 buy you these days anyhow?

Got my Voda iPhone today so will spend the evening in an app frenzy. Gerald at TD has done a list of the first five to download. I'll def be grabbing Spotify, Tweetie (so good to have a decent phone Twitter client after the rubbish ones on the OVi store) Layar and The Guar.

      Any other suggestions?

      Here's Gerald's list http://www.techdigest.tv/2010/01/five_apps_to_ge.html
